A Beautiful Eastern Phoebe Shows Us More Signs of Spring

Eastern phoebes (Sayornis phoebe) are winter birds in Florida, and technically we are still in the winter season. That said, after some unusually cold, freezing weather a week ago, we are back to normal temperatures and signs of spring are showing up everywhere. This morning, this little phoebe was perching quietly in my black cherry tree. If I had taken this shot last week, those branches would have been completely bare. In fact, just days ago, those leaves were just beginning to show as little, tiny green buds. I’m also seeing renewed insect activity, including a couple of butterflies. Even though I’m loving the warmer weather and the signs of new life, I will miss my little friend the phoebe when it decides to head back north.
