Acorns are Very Much Loved by Colorful Red Bellied Woodpeckers

Acorns, which are the fruit (or nut) of the live oak tree, are highly edible and lots of wildlife really love them. Among them are quite a few birds, including red bellied woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus). This pretty female woodpecker had found one and was in the process of breaking its shell open. She had placed it on top of the post and stabbed it several times with her beak. Once she had a hole in the nut and could really grip it, she smashed it into the post top several times to finish breaking the shell. If you look closely at the top of the post, you’ll notice bits of shell scattered there. It only took her a few seconds to open the nut, but much longer to consume the tasty treat inside.
