The White Ibis Flocks are Amazing in Cedar Key

A week ago I went out to Cedar Key to do a bird walk with some people from the local Audubon society. It was high tide, so many of the wading birds weren’t around, but there were still some ducks and other small birds to watch and photograph. The highlight of the day, though, were the huge flocks of white ibis (Eudocimus albus) that fly from Cedar Key to one of the offshore islands every night to roost. It starts with a few birds, but the closer it gets to sunset, the larger the groups get. Some of the flocks at the height of the evening are hundreds of individuals strong. On that evening the sunset was a very bright orange that was causing a really pretty pinkish, orange hue in the eastern sky where we were watching. The combination of so many birds and that beautiful sky was absolutely stunning.
