Green Anoles are Fascinating When They Change Colors

The temperatures have been up and down around here recently. Right now we are going through a warm phase and it has been really beautiful outside. With this warmer weather, some animals that we don’t usually see this time of year have been out. This afternoon I saw several small butterflies, a good sized banded garden spider that was still alive, and this little green anole (Anolis carolinensis). It had just jumped off one of my boxwood trees onto the dark brown pot. Immediately after getting on the pot its color began to change from a bright lime green to brown. The change happens pretty quickly, but it’s not immediate. I was able to catch this little one in the process of changing. I loved the yellowish color that it became and the spots that were still bright green as it changed. Within 30-45 seconds it was a dull brown pretty much everywhere except around the eyes and even those were close.
