Black and White Warblers are Beautiful

Along with several other warbler species, black and white warblers (Mniotilta varia) have arrived in Florida for the winter. I’ve been seeing one or two up high in the tree branches for a couple of weeks now. Earlier this week it was cool and rainy, and this little female came down into some lower branches to forage for insects. Even though these warblers aren’t nearly as colorful as some of the others, they have their own kind of beauty because of the contrast of their markings. Their stark, striped bodies and heads actually make them stand out amongst the warblers. Like most of the others, they are active and generally don’t stay still for long, so getting good shots of them can be challenging, but it’s a challenge that I welcome.
