A Carolina Chickadee Looks Beautiful in a Colorful Setting

The little Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) are one of the most common birds that come to my feeding stations. They usually arrive in a noisy group, all letting everyone else know they are there. Their calls, a loud “chick-a-dee-dee-dee”, are how they got their name, and they are pretty distinctive. There are a couple of places where they can feed, but they usually go to the highest one and take turns flying in, grabbing a bite, and going back into the bushes to eat it. This bird was waiting its turn to grab a morsel, but it was making sure that everyone else knew it was waiting. It’s always quite an interesting show of noise and activity when the chickadees arrive!
