Everything Can be Beautiful in the Right Situation

Dog fennel (Eupatatorium capillifolium) is a pretty common plant in the central Florida sandhills. Most of the growing season it is a relatively unremarkable green plant among all the other green plants out there. In the fall the plant gets covered in small white flowers that are very important in supporting bees, wasps, and other pollinators. The flowers will form a fuzzy white veil around the green stems and branches that is quite attractive. As the flowers fade, they become small brown seeds that are surrounded by a gauzy white fluff that can easily catch the breeze. The afternoon sun on this plant covered in seeds really made them stand out from the surroundings and emphasized all that soft fuzziness. For that moment the light took this ordinary, often times overlooked, plant and turned it into a piece of natures art.
