Autumn is a Great Time for Spotting Deer

Living in a rural area on the edge of a state forest definitely has certain advantages. One of those is that there is no shortage of wildlife in the area. Depending on the season it’s not uncommon to see wild turkeys, armadillos, or deer, especially at the beginning or end of the day. Late fall and winter are definitely deer time. When I came home from work on Friday I spotted a small group of white tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) grazing along the side of the road not far from my house. All of the deer were does, and they were not overly scared by my presence as long as I stayed in my truck. As I was watching that group, I noticed that there were more that were hiding in the brush just off the road. One of the largest ones was peeking out of the tall grass watching the ones near the road and their reactions with curiosity. She seemed to know that she was almost invisible behind the wall of grass because she did not seem alarmed at all. I loved the look of her peering through that grass, so I grabbed my camera and took a few shots. Then I slowly finished driving on by, letting them all return to feeding.
