The Beautiful Grey Catbirds are Back in Town

As fall progresses, more and more of our winter avian residents are arriving. Right now there are quite a few grey catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) who have just arrived. I doubt all of them will stay, but right now they are very busy stripping the beautyberry bushes clean of fruit. They breed across the northern United States and southern Canada and winter down here, in the Carribean Islands and in Central America. They’ve just had a long migration, so it’s not a huge surprise that they are hungry. Not all of them will stay here, but hopefully some of them will stay once the berries become less plentiful. They aren’t big on using the feeding station, but they will sometimes come out for some mealworms or fresh fruit. I look forward to seeing and hearing them through the rest of the winter. Events like fall and spring migration are part of what keeps bird watching always interesting.
