Tricolored Herons are Excellent at Fishing, but…

On Monday, I took a hike in the Crystal River Wildlife Refuge. The hike lead me along a salt marsh canal to a bigger pond and there a tricolored heron (Egretta tricolor) was fishing. While I watched the bird, it caught quite a few small fish and quickly swallowed most of them.

But I guess even the best of fishermen have the one that got away. This lucky little fish wiggled in just the right way when the bird when to toss it back towards his throat and it managed to escape. At least a little heron doesn’t feel the need to brag to his friends about how big the one that got away was.
