Colorful Roseate Spoonbills Can be Very Funny

On my latest trip out to Cedar Key, I got the opportunity to watch these two roseate spoonbills (Platalea ajaja) out on the flats preening themselves. Both of them were carefully cleaning each feather and gently fluffing themselves before they started all over again. It was a very peaceful, quiet scene until all of a sudden, both of them started swinging their heads back and forth. As they flung their heads back and forth, their legs started to move too. I know it was just to keep their balance, but it really looked like they’re were dancing. I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself. Then, just as quickly as the “dance” started, they both returned to quietly preening. Not only are these colorful birds quite beautiful, but they are also often very comical.
