The Zebra Longwing is a Beautiful Butterfly

Recently I was outside spending time with all the birds in my yard when this little zebra longwing butterfly (Heliconius charithonia) came fluttering along. The blackjack flowers are finally starting to bloom, and they always bring in plenty of pollinators. The butterfly was definitely interested in the flowers and it came by several times while I was out there. Most butterflies are pretty hard to tell from one another, but this one had some distinctive scarring on its right forewing. Even though there was a small chunk missing from the wing as well, the butterfly didn’t seem to be at all hindered. It’s flight and flight patterns were very normal and at one point it was doing a mating dance with another zebra longwing. A little wing damage is no big deal to these interesting insects.
