Ruby Throated Hummingbirds are Beautiful in Flight

I am quite taken with the little ruby throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) that has been coming around my yard lately. Although she isn’t as colorful as the male with his ruby colored throat patch, she is still a beautiful little bird. Every time I see her, I try to get some photos of her, and I’ve gotten some pretty reasonable ones of her perched, but everything I’ve taken of her in flight has not been great. The feeder is in a shaded spot, so the light is kind of low. I’ve been trying to find a good combination of enough shutter speed and lower ISO so that I could capture the bird, but not have the image be too noisy. Today I think I got close. There is still some motion blur to the wings (something that I actually rather like from an artistic point of view), but the bird is pretty sharp. I plan to continue to work on this and see if I can’t do even better, but I was pleased to get these images, so I really wanted to share them with you.
