The Little Fence Lizard Has Become Part of my Family

There are several regulars that show up when I’m outside in my back garden and I have to admit, I tend to get rather attached to them. I probably shouldn’t since they’re wild animals and almost anything could happen to them. Fortunately, most of the time they simply stop showing up and I like to think that they have just moved on to somewhere else. I’m sure part of the time, that’s true. Especially if they are animals that migrate or, like the fledgling birds that do eventually move on. This summer I’ve become quite fond of a little fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus) that comes every day to eat mealworms. I’m sure that when the weather cools, he will stop showing up, but in the mean time I look forward to seeing him almost as much as Momma and Poppa and this years bunch of fledgling cardinals. A couple of years ago, I had a fence lizard that was sun bathing on my front gate almost every afternoon when I got home from work. When fall came it stopped coming there and although I hoped it would be back the following year, it wasn’t. I still hope that this years lizard will return in the spring, but I know it may not. Instead of worrying about something I have no control over, I’ll just continue to enjoy the lizards company while I can (and make sure I get plenty of photos).
