Birds Can Be Great at Giving a Piercing Glance

Birds can be very expressive creatures. They frequently show how they are feeling with a gaze, with body language, with vocalizations, or with actions. This little tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) was not very thrilled about my presence near a new feeder that I have hung in the woods in my yard. He wanted to eat, but wasn’t at all sure that I was safe. That made him very displeased with me apparently, which he showed with this glare and with some avian words that I couldn’t understand, but definitely got the gist of. The glare lasted only a few seconds, but it did take quite a bit longer for him to decide that it was safe to eat. As the birds get used to my visiting them at this new site, they will get over this type of behavior, but that will take some time. In the mean while, I get to see some interesting behavior that I rarely see any more at my first site.
