I Miss My Beautiful Little Friends, the Pine Warblers

There were thunderstorms most of the day today, and that put me in a quiet, contemplative mood. The kind of mood where I like to look through some of my previous images and see what’s what. When I came across this one of a male pine warbler (Setophaga pinus) perched near my rose garland, I knew I wanted to use it. These little birds are year round residents here, but I rarely see much of them except during the winter. This time of year they eat almost exclusively insects which they forage for deep in the woods. When the insects become more scarce and they no longer have young to feed, they will supplement their diets with seeds and sometimes fruit and berries. That’s when they come out of the deep woods and show up at my feeding station. This little guy was perched in the early morning sun as it filtered through the branches above, probably hoping to gain a little warmth while enjoying a snack. As is typical of these smaller birds, he didn’t sit still for long. He quickly helped himself and was off to the safety of the woods again.
