Fence Lizards are Adorable and Beautiful, Too

Every year I have several of these little eastern fence lizards (Sceloporus undulatus) that live on my property. A couple years back, I had one that met me at my front gate most afternoons during the summer. I know it wasn’t really meeting me. That’s where there was a nice sun spot that time of the day, but still, it always felt like a nice little welcome home.

This one lives in my back yard and always helps itself to a few mealworms in the yard when I feed the birds. I see it out there pretty regularly and it has gotten used to me. It keeps an eye on me, but will let me get pretty close if I don’t move too fast. This rock has become its favorite sunning spot and just so happens to be right next to one of the places where I put out food. Is that a coincidence? I don’t think so. What do you think?
