Wild Turkeys are Common but Beautiful Florida Birds

Wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo osceola) are pretty common in rural areas of north central Florida, but they are not always the easiest birds to photograph. They are a common prey species, so they are always on guard and will quickly run away (or sometimes fly away) at the first signs of any type of danger including people. I frequently see them in pastures, farm fields, on roadsides, and in the woods, but the number of good images I have are minimal. I came across a small group of hens not long ago at a friend’s house. They were quite aways away, and I was in my truck, so they seemed okay with my presence. With a telephoto lens I was able to get a few photos. Not long after I started shooting, though, my friend came outside, and even though the house is much further away, they were immediately alert. As soon as one decided to start running for the woods everyone else followed, and within a few seconds they were gone. I don’t think they even saw my friend, but they heard the house door and someone’s approach, and that’s all it took.
