Cedar Key is a Great Place to See Brown Pelicans

After work yesterday I decided to go out to Cedar Key to watch some birds, see the sunset, and take some photos. As often happens, the evening didn’t turn out at all like I had planned, but it still was a great evening. I’ve never been disappointed when I’ve gone out there. They are still in the process of recovering from hurricanes Helene and Milton, but more and more is back up and running every time I go. I spent most of the time that I was there on a small dock off of the main waterfront street looking out over the ocean. The sea is always relaxing to watch, but it’s especially peaceful this time of the year. As is usual out by the sea, there were plenty of sea birds around coming and going. Among them was this pair of young brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) that came by just before the sun was setting. Based on their coloring and pattern, it’s easy to tell that they are immature. The lower one looks to be somewhat older, but they were definitely staying together as they flew across the evening sky. As late in the evening as it was, I’m sure they were headed to a roosting area. It wasn’t too much later after taking this shot that I decided to pack it in and head to my own roosting place.
