Milkwort is a Beautiful Flower That’s Great Hungry Butterflies

Earlier this week when I took a hike in the Gothe State Forest, I found a nice little patch of orange milkwort flowers (Senega lutea). The flowers are still fairly young, so right now they are yellow rather than orange, but they will darken to orange as they age. They will also become elongated (they actually add more florets as they age, which is why this happens) and they often end up looking a lot like a flowery cheese curl. They will continue to grow into the fall, and over that time, they will provide nutrition to quite a few types of pollinators, including these little pearl crescents (Phyciodes tharos). The crescents were all over these flowers, and everywhere you turned there was another little yellow flower sporting one or more multicolored butterflies. It was actually pretty impressive to see how many butterflies were fluttering around from flower to flower.
