Cute Little Chipping Sparrows Have Returned for the Winter

About two weeks ago, I saw a single little chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina) that visited the feeding station with a flock of tufted titmouse. That fellow must have been an over achiever, because I’ve only started seeing groups of them within the last week. Groups are far more the norm. They do often arrive with the titmouse flocks, but not always and they usually stay longer. Like several of the other birds I’ve photographed lately, chipping sparrows breed further north, but winter here in the southern United States. They are cute little birds that seem to be relatively fearless. Even the squirrels racing around and harassing each other doesn’t make them fly off from a meal. After eating their fill, most of them flew off, but a few decided to stay around and found perches either up in the thick leaves of the oak tree or in well covered areas in the brush. Maybe they were just taking a break before going back for seconds.
