The Fiery Skipper is a Brightly Colorful Fall Butterfly
Celestial fall begins this weekend, and although we are still more or less having summer temperatures, we are seeing signs of fall. Many of our early fall flowers are blossoming, the white tailed bucks are growing antlers, and some of our fall butterflies are showing up. One of my favorites are the fiery skippers (Hylephila phyieus). I love their bright brown, yellow, and orange colors, and I also love the way they hold their hind wings upright, reminding me of the paper airplanes we used to make as kids. It’s pretty unique to the skippers, and although they don’t rest that way all the time, when you see a small butterfly in that position you can bet it’s a skipper, even if you can’t identify the species. We have skippers on the wing most of the year in central Florida, but we see the fiery skippers mainly in the fall. To emphasize the lovely oranges in this butterfly, I did some creative processing that gave it an orange glow. It’s always fun trying to something a little different with the photos sometimes.
