Colorful Palamedes Swallowtail Butterflies Can be Part of an Interesting Mating Dance
Another interesting aspect of having found a tree that the Palamedes swallowtails (Papilio palamedes) absolutely love is that since there are so many butterflies there, it’s not surprising that they do a lot of mating flights. Like many species of butterfly, they do some elaborate flights that involve chasing each other, flying together, and eventually mating. The flights themselves are interesting to watch and can go on for extended periods of time. The flights also often take them in and out of the area, so except when one has a glaring amount of wing damage, it hard to tell which butterflies are which. Back in 2022, I took a video of a pair of them dancing in a different location. I pulled some stills out of the video and posted them, but this time, I decided to try my hand at getting some actual photos of it. As with anything, there were some that turned out well and others that were awful. Here are a couple of the better ones that show some of the common moves that they make. It really is fascinating watching them.
