Woolly Bears are Fuzzy, Beautiful, Fuzzy Caterpillars
Some of the fuzziest caterpillars we see around north central Florida are the woolly bears (Hypercompe scribonia). One look at one, and you know why they’re called woolly bears. The picture above made me think about some punk rocker having a bad hair day. It gave me a chuckle, so I wanted to share that with you. Woolly bears are the immature stage of the giant leopard moth. I see quite a few of the moths and the caterpillars both on my own property and in the surrounding woods throughout the warmer weather. They feed on the leaves of quite a few different plants, and they can polish off a good sized leaf in no time. Because of that, many gardeners are not very fond of them, but I find them both beautiful and fascinating to watch.
