Some people don’t really like the eastern grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) coming to their feeding stations, but I don’t mind them at all. They do tend to make little piggies of themselves, and occasionally they do scare some of the birds, but there is plenty for everyone, and the birds get used to them. Lately, I have been putting out some fresh fruit as well as seeds and suet, and the squirrels have really been enjoying it. They will eat bananas and grapefruit, but they really seem to like grapes. This little guy was totally enjoying them and ate several while I was watching him over the weekend. I think he’s still pretty young, and he’s fairly low in the pecking order, so he tends to run in and grab a few bites before one of the others runs him off. On this day, though, he was all by himself and got to enjoy his grapes in peace.
