Interesting Little Manatee Tree Snails Devour Algae
I realized that I hadn’t posted any video in quite awhile, so I thought why not? Video isn’t my main means of expression, but some things are just better in a video, and this is definitely one of them. Every spring and summer I have quite a few of these little manatee tree snails (Drymaeus dormani) in my yard and around the house. Now don’t freak out, my gardening friends. These aren’t plant eating snails. Instead, they eat algae, which there is plenty of here in Florida. I found this one crawling along my front gate eating the algae off the surface. If you watch the back of it’s head and neck, you can see the algae being swallowed. Now, how cool is that? And a video of it shows what’s happening much better than a series of photos would. This little one looks kind of beat up, but it doesn’t seem to be effecting it’s appetite. I like having these guys around because not only do they clean the house and fences, but they also clean many trees and plants, so they actually help to keep them healthier.
