This Great Egret Thought it Was Well Hidden in the Brush

I decided to take advantage of it being sunny and bright, but cold, to go looking for birds. It’s been chilly for Florida for several days now, and the birds have been especially hungry, so they’re out and about. I found this great egret (Ardea alba), also sometimes called a great white egret or great white heron, fishing in a local pond. It was quite aware of my presence, but it either saw me as no threat or more likely it thought it was hidden in the surrounding reeds and underbrush. During the spring or summer it would have been hidden, but as you can see, even Florida is brown and leafless right now. It doesn’t make things super pretty, but it does make the birds easier to see and find. Anyhow, for whatever reason, the bird let me get quite close for a couple of shots of it as it hunted. I love the look of concentration in those eyes in both photos. Unfortunately, it missed its fish when it struck and it decided to move on to a new spot. I didn’t want to scare it off, so I decided not to follow.
