The Sun is Important to Green Anoles as the Fall Progresses
When I walked down to the mailbox yesterday afternoon, I found this cute little fellow having a nice sun bath on my front gate. When I first saw him he was stretched out the long way on the gate support and looked very relaxed. I hated to have to disturb him, but the only way to the mailbox required me to open the gate. Before I opened the gate I took a couple of photos, and then I opened it as gently as possible. When I came back through the gate, my little friend was still there, almost like he was waiting for me to go away. I gently closed the gate again, and as I walked back up the driveway he was starting to stretch out again. Even though our weather has still been warm, the temperatures are definitely lower than they were in the summer, and the reptiles need warm temperatures to keep their metabolism going, especially in the evening. I’m sure this little guy was taking advantage of the late afternoon sun to warm him before the temperatures started to drop in the evening. Before long all the anoles will be going into hiding and a hibernation type state for the winter, so I have to enjoy them now before they’re gone for the winter.
