Colorful Showy Rattlebox Lives Up to Its Name
It’s the time of year when the beautiful, bright yellow showy rattlebox flowers (Crotalaria spectabilis) are blooming all along the roadsides. They’re one of several large yellow wildflowers that are popping up everywhere right now. Showy rattlebox, being a member of the pea or legume family (Fabaceae) has the typical trilobed appearance and the flowers very quickly become large, pale green pods that contain the seeds. When shaken, the seeds will rattle around inside the pods, hence the name rattlebox. Both the flowers and the pods are pretty and definitely showy, making for a really colorful drive wherever you go in central Florida in the fall.
