Carolina Wolf Spiders Look Scarier than They Are
At the beginning of the week, I found this beautiful Carolina wolf spider (Hogna carolinensis) in our office. It’s not uncommon to find them in there since we have an attached warehouse that stays open to the outside most days. Most of my office mates are afraid of them, so whenever I find one, I catch it and return it to outside. If I have time, I usually get some photos before I catch them. For the most part, even though they can bite, they rarely bother with people unless we mess with them. As you can see, this one didn’t mind my getting pretty close with my macro lens in order to get this photo. When I went to catch it, though, it ran into a small hole in the wall. But that’s okay because they eat lots of pest insects like flies and cockroaches and no office needs those! My office mates might not necessarily agree, but I find roaches more offensive than any spider.
