Central Florida is Known for Fantastic and Beautiful Phlox Flowers
Spring is a very colorful time of the year in most of the world, and certain areas are known for various special flowers. Although central Florida isn’t as well known as Holland for its tulips or France and Belgium for their lavender fields, our phlox flowers do draw tourists into the area. Through much of our early spring open fields, pastures, roadsides, and medians can be covered with large patches of these colorful wildflowers. The Drummond’s phlox (Phlox drummondii) come in a lot of color variations and that’s part of what makes them so attractive. They are native to the southeastern United States, but their seeds and young plants can be found in nurseries all around the world for use as ornamentals. Below are photos of many of the color variations that we have in the wild here in central Florida. These are not all of the available varieties and several of them are quite similar with just mild changes in the base colors. Looking at these, I hope you can imagine how gorgeous a large roadside patch or median filled with phlox can be.
