The Beautiful Zebra Swallowtail is a Strikingly Colorful Butterfly

Last week as I was leaving work I was putting my stuff in the truck when a large striped butterfly literally buzzed me. It turns out it was headed towards a patch of blackjack flowers nearby, but it seemed like an invitation to a photo session. I’m not one to turn that down! The blackjack is just beginning to flower, but it is particularly attractive to butterflies. I let a big patch of it grow at my house for just that reason. This particular butterfly happened to be a zebra swallowtail (Protographium marcellus), one of Florida’s largest and prettiest butterflies. I did take quite a few photos of this and one other zebra swallowtail while they fluttered from flower to flower looking for nectar. Besides taking pictures, it was fun to watch them. They would flutter around each other for a few seconds, and then head off to different flowers to eat. They would stay apart for awhile and then repeat the same performance. Here are a few of the photos that I shot. Hopefully, you will find these pretty, striped creatures as charming as I did.
