The Boat-Tailed Grackle Is an Interesting Coastal Bird
Spending lots of time near the beach and living in a town near the coast of Florida in my younger years, I got very accustomed to seeing boat-tailed grackles (Quiscalus major) around. Now that I live a little further inland, I definitely miss their crazy antics. They are birds that have gotten very used to living around people. If food is around, they will find a way to get into it. They are common scavengers in trash cans, picnics, parking lots, and restaurants. Many places along the Florida coast have to warn patrons not to feed the birds since the grackles and the gulls become quite tame, but can be aggressive over food. This is a species that is sexually dimorphic with the male being bigger and darker in color than the female. These images were actually taken last year, but I did the post processing this week. I used a combination of regular photo processing and then did quite a bit of hand drawing in Procreate. These combination projects are my favorites since they let me to do both artwork and photography.
