Even Small Things Can Hold Great Beauty and Intrigue
Snails have always fascinated me. It’s something about their slow, smooth movements and the way they can stick and unstick themselves to things. I mean how cool is that! It’s almost a superpower. Add eyes that are up on stalks and can move independently of each other and I’m hooked. I know a lot of folks think that snails are slimy and gross, and a lot of gardeners don’t like them since many of them damage plants, but I’m that nut who likes spiders and snakes, so why not snails? These snails are manatee tree snails not actually plant damaging snails, so that makes them a little better. They live on algae and fungus, which we have an abundance of down here in the summer. This particular snail was on my front gate one morning and was in the process of passing from one panel to the next. I thought that this macro photo really emphasized those eyes which I find so interesting.
