Today is Both World Animal Day and World Habitat Day

This year both World Animal Day and World Habitat Day happen to fall on the same day. World Animal Day is always celebrated on October 4 in honor of the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi who is the patron saint of animals. This day is also known as Animal Lover’s Day and it’s goal is to increase awareness about the importance of animals in the ecosystem and to improve conditions for all animals, both wild and domestic. Activities associated with World Animal Day include educational events, pet adoption events, and animal blessings. This year one of the most important animal issues that is being addressed is climate change and loss of animal habitat through deforestation and human development.

World Habitat Day, on the other hand, is celebrated on the first Monday of October and has the aim of considering the state of our habitats, and the basic right of everyone to adequate shelter. This day is also meant to remind us all that it is the responsibility of everyone to strive to insure the future our our towns, cities, and communities. Although at first glance these two days and their goals may not exactly compliment each other, but if instead of thinking just about our own community, we consider all communities on this earth, including ones that don’t include human beings, you can begin to see how the two days actually mesh quite nicely. You can see this better if you look at the theme for this year’s World Habitat Day, which is “accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world”. This theme is based on the fact that our cities are responsible for the vast majority of worlds carbon dioxide emissions that are harmful to most important habitat of all, the environment of Earth.
