Yesterday Was the Third Annual National Pet Bird Day
September 17 was the third annual National Pet Bird Day which is sponsored by the Bird Enjoyment and Advantage Koalition (BEAK). They are a group that was founded to promote responsible pet bird ownership by providing people with tips for bird care and tools to help them find the right bird for them. Believe it or not, pet bird ownership has become very popular in the United States with nearly 6 million American households including one or more bird. And this is nothing new. People have been keeping pet birds for thousands of years. The White House has even housed pet birds before. Andrew Jackson, Ulysses S. Grant, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, and Calvin Coolidge all had pet birds!
So how did you celebrate National Pet Bird Day? I celebrated by giving my little feathered friends some extra treats. They both love cheese, so they got some of that in the morning and then they got some sliced fruit in the evening. They enjoyed that very much! Other ways you could celebrate include giving your pets some extra TLC or a new toy. National Pet Bird Day is also a great day to adopt a bird if you have been considering it, or to start researching the best bird for you and your household. Like other types of pets, different types of birds have different personalities and different abilities. However you chose to celebrate, I hope you had a wonderful National Pet Bird Day!
