It’s Time for a Big Celebration for National Mutt Day!
Every year on July 31 we celebrate National Mutt Day. So often mixed breed dogs, or mutts, are overlooked in favor of their purebred friends. But, did you know that even most “purebred” dogs began as mixes of other breeds to provide the qualities that are desirable for that breed? It’s only with time and selective breeding that they become acknowledged as purebred. The selective breeding that goes into our purebred dogs often not only leads to desirable traits, but often also leads to some undesirable traits or health conditions. This is not to say that purebred dogs are bad! They’re not, but just don’t forget about our friends the mutts!
There are quite a few advantages to mutts. First, they tend to have fewer health problems than purebred dogs. The larger the genetic pool, the less likely there are to be genetic anomalies that can result in disease. Mutts generally have a much greater gene pool than purebred dogs. Second, mutts are unique. Again because of their bigger genetic pool, each mutt is different, even littermates. Again, that’s not to say that all purebred dogs are alike. Obviously, that’s not true, but they tend to be more like each other than mutts do. Finally, mutts are just as loving and fun as purebred dogs.
So what can we do to celebrate National Mutt Day? If you are considering getting a new canine companion, consider getting a mutt. Mutts can be found all over. People who have accidental litters are frequently giving away mutt puppies. Mutts of all ages, sizes, and shapes can also be found at local shelters and rescue organizations. Often these places have great dogs that come with vaccinations, sterilization, testing, and microchips for very reasonable prices (sometimes even free). Often times these dogs are very appreciative of your love, attention, and care since they may have come from less than ideal situations in the past.
If adoption of a new dog is not in the cards right now you can still celebrate. Consider making a donation to your local shelter or rescue organizations. These groups are almost always in need of money, supplies, and volunteers. Give the organization a call or email and find out what they need. Also, consider going to shelter and rescue websites or blogs like this, and interacting with their content. You can find some very interesting information on some of these sites. If you have a mutt or two share their photos on your social media page in celebration of this wonderful day. I’m sure there are plenty of other ways to celebrate as well. How are you celebrating National Mutt Day today?
